Lyrics

In the pouring rain

I will be the same

When you're wandering

You and I will still remain

You'll run to hide

Deep in the night

Give up the fight

I am always on your side

In the pouring rain

I will never change

When you feel afraid

I am there to bear the weight

I'll turn the tide

Open the sky

You'll be alright

I am always on your side

I am enough, always enough

You are enough, precious and loved

Morning will come, sure as the sun

I am enough, you are enough

You are enough

In the middle of the pouring rain

I will call your name

When your soul sways

On and off and on again

You'll change your mind

But still be mine

We're intertwined

I am always by you

I am enough, always enough

You are enough, precious and loved

Morning will come, sure as the sun

I am enough, you are enough

Every child of God

1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Romans 5:6-11

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

1 John 3:1

1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

Reflection

This song, written from God’s perspective, calls us to rest in the sufficiency of Christ, regardless of circumstances. At the core, the truest and most defining thing about us is that we are beloved children of God in Christ. We are not loved because we are lovable, or wanted because God needs anything from us. In fact, as the lyrics of the song reflect, we often run and hide, we fight against what God wants for us, and our hearts are fickle even when we desire to trust God with whatever is going on.

Because of all of these realities, we may be tempted to feel that we are not enough, that we must become better in order to come to God. But this completely misses the point of the Gospel. God didn’t wait for us to be enough. He came to us when we were still in rebellion to Him, completely rejecting Him. Praise the Lord that He did, because we can never be “enough” on our own. We are only enough because Christ is enough. That is something that cannot be shaken. In Him, we are secure.

The songwriter uses a phrase that at first glance may seem odd and self-absorbed — he claims that God is always “on our side”. How narcissistic, you may think, God isn’t on MY side. And in one sense you would be correct. We so often want God to jump on the bandwagon of what we want for our lives. We want Him to fall in line with our plans and to make them happen. In essence, we want to be God, and we want God to be a vending machine.

But I’m not convinced that is what the singer is trying to get at here. Stepping back and looking at all of our hopes and dreams, if we’re honest and self-aware we can see that we sometimes desire things that really aren’t good for us. Sometimes we even want good things in a way that robs them of their goodness — when we elevate our desires and values to take God’s place as the ultimate orientation of our life, for instance. But God knows what is best for us, and brings it to pass in our lives, even when it feels like everything we don’t want. In that sense, God is more on our side than even we are. As the only one who sees the full picture, He works what is ultimately for our good as His children (Rom 8:28), even when we’d rather He didn’t.

Take some time to reflect on how you tend to respond when things in life go differently than you expect or want. When that happens, what do you think, feel, say, do? What would it be to return to the enough-ness of God, His love, and His plans in those moments? To cling to the hope of the good that God will bring out of pain? Talk with God about that.
